TOY FAIR 2001: [Remember - every picture links to a larger size!] Dinosaurs were out in force at Hasbro's dramatic display for the third in the successful series of "Jurassic Park" films, and despite a strong Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus presence, the fin-backed Spinosaurus seems to be the star of the show.
Immediately noticeable was that the sculpting of both the dinosaurs and human characters is vastly superior to that of the first two movies' toys.
This time around, the main gimmick of the line is "RE-AK A-TAK," a system of touch-sensors and electronics embedded in many of the toys which makes them thrash, claw or bite and emit screams, growls and roars (or motor and weapon sounds, in the case of the vehicles) during play. Torn flesh and exposed bones were a common theme amongst the dinosaur figures in the line, and pressing the buttons concealed within these gruesome wounds produced all sorts of ferocious (or possibly agonized) dinosaur sounds. Although this may sound like a been-there, seen-that feature, the interactivity of the toys was appealing, and the sound effects (although produced by a computer for this selection of prototypes) were quite impressive.
And here are the rest of the "Jurassic Park III" figures and sets.
Altered States Magazine would especially like to thank the kind folks at Hasbro, LEGO, Bandai, Toycom, and the Toy Fair workers for their help.
