Final Battle Kroenen
Don't worry, this one's going to be short. Final Battle Kroenen was the
Sideshow web-store-exclusive variant of the standard figure, limited to the
first 750 orders placed. He came in an identical box to the mass retail
version, and he features the same design, outfit and accessories... with a
couple of key differences.
The only change between the two outfits is that the exclusive Kroenen lacks
the fabric hood of the normal edition. Instead, he has a basic collar. His
head sculpt is also different; while the face (still nightmarish) is
identical, Final Battle Kroenen wears a permanently-attached half-helmet on
the back of his head, with a thin pleather covering hanging down his neck.
Painted on one side of the helmet-base is a tiny Nazi flag, and there are
six small pegs along the top to which the exclusive figure's new masks attach.
Final Battle Kroenen includes two new masks, or rather two versions of the same mask. This is the one that he wore during his final bout with Hellboy. With smaller lenses, exposed tubing on the breathing device and a dull silver finish, it looks like a prototype for the sleeker black mask worn earlier in the movie. Below the chin is a short collar with straps, sculpted and painted to look like leather.
The first version of the mask is minty fresh. The second is what it looks
like after taking a punch from the Right Hand of Doom. The left side of
the mask is dented and crumpled, its crude features mashed by Hellboy's
stone fist. One lens has been broken, letting you see Kroenen's bulging
eyeball behind it. This thing isn't in good shape.
The masks are painted well, with the usual wash to bring out the details (particularly effective on the smashed-in version). They peg onto the back half of the helmet firmly, although there tends to be a slight gap down the sides due to the soft plastic.
If you're a casual fan or collector, there's no real reason that you have
to own both versions of Kroenen. They're essentially the same figure; it's
just a question of whether you want a representation of the character from
earlier in the movie or from near the end. The more die-hard collector
will, of course, want both. In fact, why not get two of each, so you can
show off all four masks at the same time?
I haven't gone quite that far yet, but I'm happy to have two versions of the figure. ...What's that? There's a third version of Kroenen? Uh-oh...
